Biology and nutrition of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) fed on different food sources Scientia Agricola
Silva,Débora Mello da; Bueno,Adeney de Freitas; Andrade,Karine; Stecca,Cristiane dos Santos; Neves,Pedro Manuel Oliveira Janeiro; Oliveira,Maria Cristina Neves de.
ABSTRACT: We studied Spodoptera frugiperda development using different food sources in the laboratory and field. Newly hatched larvae were fed soybean, cotton, maize, wheat, and oat leaves. An artificial diet was used as the control. Duration of pre-pupal, pupal, and larva-adult period, pupal weight, sex ratio, survival, larva feeding preferences, oviposition preferences, and nutritional quality of different hosts were evaluated. Insects fed on wheat showed the shortest larva-adult period. The insects fed on cotton and soybean had longer larval development cycles and pupae of lower weight. Feeding preference was evident for third instar larvae and did not differ between wheat, oat, maize, and soybean, which were the preferred hosts. Moths oviposited to a...

Detrimental effect of rutin on Anticarsia gemmatalis PAB
Hoffmann-Campo,Clara Beatriz; Ramos Neto,José Augusto; Oliveira,Maria Cristina Neves de; Oliveira,Lenita Jacob.
Behavioral and nutritional effect of rutin (quercetin 3-O-rutinosídeo) on Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lep.: Noctuidae), a major soybean defoliator in Brazil, was evaluated from the third instar to pupation. Rutin is one of the flavonol glycosides identified in the leaves of the wild soybean PI 227687. Larval weight and amount of ingested food decreased as rutin concentration in the diet increase. An interactive effect between feeding time and diet (treatment) was observed on insect growth; when larvae fed on pure-diet, feeding time elongation resulted in heavier pupae. Differently, the weight of larvae fed on rutin-diet remained almost stable, in spite of eating for longer. A. gemmatalis growth was negatively influenced by rutin-diet not only by feeding...

Morpho-anatomical and micromorphometrical evaluations in soybean genotypes during water stress BABT
Stolf,Renata; Medri,Moacyr Eurípedes; Pimenta,José Antônio; Boeger,Maria Regina Torres; Dias,Jaqueline; Lemos,Noélle Giacomini; Oliveira,Maria Cristina Neves de; Brogin,Rodrigo Luís; Yamanaka,Naoki; Neumaier,Norman; Farias,José Renato Bouça; Nepomuceno,Alexandre Lima.
In a greenhouse experiment, morpho-anatomical and micromorphometrical analyses of two soybean cultivars, MG/BR46 (Conquista) and BR16-tolerant and sensitive to drought, respectively-were used to study their water-deficit-tolerance strategies. Drought treatments were applied at reproductive stages from R2 to R7, where evaluations were conducted at 30 days and 45 days after stress started, respectively. The total length of Conquista plants (shoot + root) was greater than of BR16 plants. Pod dry weight was adversely affected due to the lack of moisture, decreasing productivity even of Conquista plants. Both the cultivars had normal development of root hairs; however, it was observed a decrease in the cortex:central cylinder ratio in BR16 stressed for 30 days,...

Mycelial compatibility and aggressiveness of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum isolates from Brazil and the United States PAB
Koga,Lucimara Junko; Bowen,Charles Roger; Godoy,Claudia Vieira; Oliveira,Maria Cristina Neves de; Hartman,Glen Lee.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic diversity among Sclerotinia sclerotiorum isolates from Brazil and the USA, assess their aggressiveness variability, and verify the existence of an isolate-cultivar interaction. Isolate variability was determined by mycelial compatibility grouping (MCG), and isolate aggressiveness by cut-stem inoculations of soybean cultivars. Two experiments for MCGs and two for aggressiveness were conducted with two sets of isolates. The first set included nine isolates from the same soybean field in Brazil and nine from the Midwest region of the USA. The second set included 16 isolates from several regions of Brazil and one from the USA. In the first set, 18 isolates formed 12 different MCGs. In the second set, 81%...

Physiological parameters in sugarcane cultivars submitted to water deficit Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Graça,José Perez da; Rodrigues,Fabiana Aparecida; Farias,José Renato Bouças; Oliveira,Maria Cristina Neves de; Hoffmann-Campo,Clara Beatriz; Zingaretti,Sonia Marli.
To investigate the processes involved in the susceptibility of sugarcane plants to water deficit, several physiological parameters were evaluated in drought tolerant (SP83-2847 and CTC15) and sensitive (SP86-155) cultivars. The water deficit affected the photosynthetic apparatus of all the plants in different ways, within and among cultivars. The photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance decreased significantly in all cultivars submitted to water deficit. In control plants of the tolerant cultivars (SP83-2847 and CTC15) the photosynthetic rate was higher than in the sensitive cultivar (SP86-155). Cultivar CTC15 showed the highest relative water content during the dry period. The quantum efficiency photosystem II of cultivar SP83-2847 was more stable in...

Quantitative differential expression of alpha and beta ryanodine receptor genes in PSE (Pale, Soft, Exudative) meat from two chicken lines: broiler and layer BABT
Oda,Sandra Helena Inoue; Nepomuceno,Alexandre Lima; Ledur,Mônica Corrêa; Oliveira,Maria Cristina Neves de; Marin,Silvana Regina Rockenbach; Ida,Elza Iouko; Shimokomaki,Massami.
Total RNA isolated from Pectoralis major muscle from PSE (L*24h>53.0, pH<5.8) and non-PSE (44<"L*24h>"53) meats of two phenotypically distinct chicken lines, broiler and layer, was used to investigate the α-ryr and β-ryr gene expression by real-time RT-PCR approach. Mean relative quantification (RQ) values were lower (p<0.05) for β-ryr in PSE chickens from both lines when compared to non-PSE chickens, while there was no difference (p>0.05) in α-ryr gene expression regardless of line studied. The β-ryr RQ results suggested that in PSE samples an alteration might occur in the regular ratio (1:1) of α-RyR/β-RyR normally found in avian muscles. These results provided the first evidence of PSE meat occurrence as a result of the differential...
